The hijab is nothing more than a fashion accessory

I don’t consider a veiled woman pious and holier-than-thou. Most I know are no different in piety and "purity" than those who choose not to veil. My Persian secularism sees veils as merely a vestige of the past, that comes and goes with the changing of the wind (political-religious climate). To "serious white Muslims," the Islam of today is not the Islam of 1947 when we saw the partition of South Asia along religio-nationalistic lines. Most hijabis are not as puritanical as they may be perceived by extremists and non-Muslims. But according to Lailah, I’m an uneducated tawdry "Mediterranean" complexion Persian-Mexican who needs the guidance and "connections" of the white "Masta."

Perhaps "Masta" is a colloquial form of "master", using a dialect which Mark Twain popularized.
Hijab is a personal
Hijab is a personal choice. Wear it or don’t wear it, its up to the individual. What it says to the general public in America is; religion, or perhaps lack of freedom, either way, if you are secular and you don’t want to wear it, don’t wear it. And as far as puritanical hummm I frankly am not that into other peoples personal lives to say whether someone wears hijab honestly or not. In fact who am I to say that or anyone for that matter. Let’s assume that we are all just humans making choices and some make good ones some make bad ones. I can’t demean someone for making either. I don’t know what Masta means, perhaps the poster GustavoMustafa can tell us.

I don’t really see hijab
I don’t really see hijab as a fashion accessory, although it certainly can be one. I see it as a combination of religious adherence and expression of identity. Indeed, to the women I’ve spoken to who wear it, it is very much a religious requirement. Even if I don’t agree, I know I gotta respect that.

We must wear the hijab!
Wearing the Hijab is not a choice! come on people, how can anyone who is claiming to be a true muslim, meaning: you practice the religion, the religion is a big part of your everday life, say that wearing the hijab is a choice? I don’t understand this. Anybody who studies the religion knows wearing a hijab if you are a muslim woman, or a girl who has reached puberty, has to and must wear the hijab. "It is not for a believer, man or woman, when Allah and His Messenger have decreed a matter that they should have any option in their decision. And whoever disobeys Allah and His Messenger, he has indeed strayed into a plain error}* (Al-Ahzab 33:36). The decision has already been made for us ladies by Allah! so you as a muslim woman cannot decide whether to wear the hijab or not, YOU MUST WEAR the hijab. Of course that’s if you have any interest in pleasing Allah and not human beings or yourself.

Who’s we? I know loads of Muslim women who are pious, modest, and don’t cover Arab or Persian style. If you choose to, well bully for you, but ordering people around is so not the way to get invited over for tea around here.
Naima84 Muslim women do
Naima84 Muslim women do not have to wear hijab, plain and simple. You should be ashamed spreading falsehoods about religion. This is not prescribed at all either in the Quran or Hadiths. It says that women should cover their bosoms, not their heads!
