Hijabi Cheerleader! I Kid You Not!!

A little while ago, when someone forwarded a picture of a female Iranian swimmer clad in a blue body suit complete with cap and added a humourous note to it, I was one of the people saying that one really shouldn't make fun of a person who was wearing such odd garb either out of religious conviction, or out of necessity born of pressure from her society and community--and most probably the institution, sporting or academic or what have you, that she was part of.

And it is in that context that I offer the following:

The girls in this picture are dressed the way they are dressed because society--and their school's uniform regulations--makes them dress the way they are dressed:

but take a look at this one, particularly the lady in the middle of this picture:

Is that a black abaya-clad person at the same event holding pom-poms?

I can make a lot of comments and pontificate, but would anyone else care to?

[The pictures, by the way, are taken from here.]

OK, they need a forcible makeover. They could have at least done the sweater with ankle length skirt thing.

The black abaya is matched only by the stern look on her face. It just sparkles with cheer and team spirit.

You have gotta admit, even if not politically correct, it is a little funny. I hear she does stand up comedy after the game, real hoot.

Actually, a lot of Iranian women wear these and I have witnessed a delightful woman drop her chador and partied like nobody's bidnis. It was at a wedding and kind of shocking, but it changed everything about the way I look at and interact with her. She no longer seems to be in perpetual mourning to me.

Its not just the abaya-girl; no one in the second picture looks very happy. It must be one of those "volun-told" participation things...

I know. It looks S-E-R-I-O-U-S.

Like a badminton-to-the-death match.

Yeah, it looks like a nightmare of a high school.

Nakia is right on the mark, one can look totally awesome and be comfortable for sports and meet modesty requirements. Besides, I would argue that a woman's dress should be consistent with the work or sports she is doing. If a swimmer, then one of those ultra fast olympic body suits would seem to be appropriate, correct? Cheerleaders can wear something reasonably modest that still allows them to jump around and say "go team" in ways that do not signal the coming of a Muslim version of "Bring it On." Although I can see a Bollywood film handling that topic perfectly well.

Common sense is the cure to all ills.

hey but cheerleading is a sport so they can wear a full shell and top with a miniskirt and cotton trousers under it, the nca allowss it so they can u c
