ISRAELI SITUATIONISM? UPDATING THE DETOURNEMENT?
Not sure if any of you caught this over at Baraka Bashment when it happened, but as a tag-along to the recent thread regarding the Iranian Holocaust Cartoon Contest, here was one Israeli group's way to combat some harsh anti-Semetism.
From the wesite:
“We’ll show the world we can do the best, sharpest, most offensive Jew hating cartoons ever published!†said Sandy “No Iranian will beat us on our home turf!â€Â

Israeli Anti-Semetic Cartoon Contest

I thought the reaction was pretty hilarious, but I'm not sure what was "perceived" about the anti-semitism in the Iranian contest.
"but I'm not sure what was "perceived" about the anti-semitism in the Iranian contest." Can you explain? Perhaps my wording is a bit off. Does it sound like I am saying the Iranian contest was possibly *not* anti-semetic?I re-edited the line. Sloppy language on my part.
Holy Cow! That is a great response. Mel Brooks said that he made the Producers because the only possible response is ridicule. Works for me. Brilliant, it completely undermines the power of the Iranian cartoon contest.
The one posted here based off the Giving Tree is priceless. Really priceless. It hurts.
You gotta love people who can laugh at themselves....
A double detournement frenzy! Radical uber-leftist methods CAN have an effect. Though as stated below, can be used by both "sides." Here, the Israeli Org. were able to take a well known book (written by a rather subversive figure in his own right), recontextualize it, turn the humor against themselves, while simultaneously defusing the impact of the offender. No one is a better critic of themselves than themselves. We know all the little nooks and crannies. Chess at its finest!
"In detournement, an artist reuses elements of well-known media to create a new work with a different message, often one opposed to the original. The term "detournement", borrowed from the French, originated with the Situationist International.
Detournement is similar to satirical parody, but employs more direct reuse or faithful mimicry of the original works rather than constructing a new work which merely alludes strongly to the original. It may be contrasted with recuperation, in which originally subversive works and ideas are themselves appropriated by mainstream media."
Humor is a serious critique. Not everyone understands the subtlety and intelligence of humor and how humor can produce a more incisive critique than a serious essay or footnoted treatise might do. You'd think that Aristophanes and Richard Pryor would be enough to prove the point. Humor can be revolutionary! I'm not sure why people do not notice this, perhaps it is an inability to laugh, to see the absurdity in life, or what? Perhaps it is over earnestness. And you know what Oscar Wilde said about that (reputedly), "The only thing to do with the earnest is to send them on a very long errand."
I used to like An American Tail until I realised what it was about.
I think there is often this idea that religion/Islam is precious. That we need to protect it from something. I think this is simply fear. Like, we gotta keep it clean and don't air out the laundry and make fun of yourself, etc etc etc because once we let our gaurd down that's when we get hit. Preparing for the attack is not only defensive but offensive. Creates an environment of egg shells.
Thankfully this site combats that tendency. Bonkers? The Iron Sheikh?
I'd love to see some real Islamic Situationism, or Islamic performance that isn't the usual local Craft Culture Fair presentation. MMK has been huge in creating a space for performance!
Bring out the clowns!
What is American Tail about? I never saw it.
Yes Sidi B. Let's make this a space for all that!
Yes. What is it about other than the obvious?
And what is Sidi B Laury? Does Sidi=siddhi?
Sidi is Moroccan for "Sir"
Sidi Baraka....
Splendid. And for Madaam?
Lalla
Lalla. How sweeeeeeeet.
I am going to be Lalla this and Lalla that for a while.
What is American Tail about? I never saw it.
That suprises me because it was really popular at one point. I was only joking but it will be more funny if you find out for yourself. Like via google for example.
Ah, I get the joke. I'm a little slow some days. You liked it until you realized it was not just about mice and cats!
Look buddy, it came out in 1986. I was 22 years old and not so into cartoons anymore. Actually, I do not care for most animation. I still like the old warner bros cartoons of my youth and shows like Aqua Teen Hunger Force, but kiddie animation plus Spielberg, no way.
My favorite message comedy is "Airplane"

I said I was joking. I never liked.I just thought that was quite a good anti-semetic joke.
