Kill in the name of Jesus
I saw a poster today which transfixed me.
It had a large cross, red, white and blue with stars and stripes. Above it was written, "Kill in the name of Jesus." And to the lower side, in smaller letters, "Our god is better than their god."
The whole thing was labelled, "fundamental hatred."
Wow.
Whoever designed that one had succeeded in being almost blasphemously funny, mordantly ironic, and deeply Christian all at the same time.ÂÂ
On one level, the poster makes fun of certain right-wing, pro-war interpretations of Christianity which seem to be gaining a lot of traction nowadays in the US.
On another, it calls to mind General Boykin's infamous attempt at interfaith comparison, when he said that while in Christianity, "God sends his son to die for us", in Islam, Muslims send their sons to die for God. Yeah, right. Nowadays, American Christians hardly lag behind anyone else in sending their sons (and daughters) to die. Nor do Muslims have a monopoly on using God as a pretext for unleashing murder and mayhem. This poster skewers such double-talk for the hypocrisy it is.
But at the same time, it's an appeal to recognizably Christian values.
Looking at that poster, I wondered why it is that Muslims, even progressive ones, often seem to have such a hard time creating humour, and why, when they try, at least some people will get offended. Yes, I agree that the fatwa on cell phones piece was not the funniest of the funny. It was too bitter, for one thing. Good humour has a lighter touch. A lot of progressive attempts at humour are too strained to be truly funny.
But I think that humour tends to improve with practice. I see no reason why it shouldn't be possible to be funny, even bitingly satirical, and yet deeply Islamic. Do Muslims tend to take themselves too seriously? Isn't Islam about recognizing and seeing through "idols"—-things, concepts, dearly held conventional "values" which end up being stand-ins for God? Isn't humour a good way to do that?
Why shouldn't we satirize fatwas? And why isn't the obsessive focus on women's sexuality, reproductive role, and access to the trappings of modernity which tends to leave men free to do pretty much as they like seen as an appropriate topic for humour?ÂÂ

‘Why shouldn’t we satirize fatwas?’ MH
I believe we should. Part of the reason why many Muslims do not satirize fatwas is what they are taught and what they read about God’s assistants. Check Hadith #7, of the 40 hadiths. It asks Muslims to accord ulema respect by not belittling them, etc. Ulemas are God’s men on earth.
I for one dislike such easy
I for one dislike such easy statements, no matter how “true” they seem. If it were a Qu’ran painted with a crescent moon and star, and the same slogan, how would Muslims react?
Ya Haqq!
In North America in the year
In North America in the year 2006, I’d say by far the majority of Christians would understand that anyone calling explicitly for “killing in the name of Jesus” is either being satirical, or is just plain wacko. While it’s ok in some conservative circles to call for it indirectly (as in supporting capital punishment, or war), it’s not made explicit. Since the poster is so obviously satirical, it grabs people’s attention and hopefully makes them think.
But unfortunately, due to the real presence of Muslim groups who call for killing in the name of Allah/Islam, I don’t think we’d have the luxury of simply understanding an analogous poster about Islam as satire. My first instinct would be to probably wonder whether Hizb al-Tahrir had posted it.
Bummer.
I think religious moderates
I think religious moderates and athiests overdue it when they blame CHristian Fundamentalist for the United States foreign policy. There are religious moderates and atheists who are pro-war and pro-torture (example: Sam Harris, whos is an athiest author who blames everything on religion)
Look at the Vietnam war, that has nothing to do with religion. Maybe 3 to 5 million Vietnamese were killed. THere is no exact figure on the number. Yet often old-timers who talk about their activisms during the 1960’s don’t bring up how many Vietnamese were killed.
THe United states topples regimes and fuels wars in developing nations, saying it is in our interests. THose who go around blaming religion or those who go around blaming lack of relgion should be discussing how we can stop the government from killing in the name of “democracy” and “our interest”.
What are these "recognizably
What are these “recognizably Christian values” to which you believe the poster appeals?
