modesty is a state of mind

hijab i

A woman is wearing a veil (hijab)as the proper attire for women should be in Islam. She has also put Kohl on her eyes. This is the only type of make-up that is allowed to be worn by women.

if this is the only make up allowed in islam..then its pretty inticing….woah

I have been reading the articles on this site for a while now and want to add to the confusion of being a muslim.if it is any consolation, being a muslim is even more complicated when you are living  in a muslim country. there is the problem of sects to deal with along with the usual double standards.

This is what I am striving for ; to be one with the Self,to feel close to God ( however one may describe him/her) and to leave the rest to him/her.

i am intrigued by the hijab issue taken up in one of the columns on this site.

I do not wear  it.

i also think it never has been an issue with me because there are so many other areas that need ammendment that this is way down on the list.

yes, it is preferred that women cover their hair at least, to begin with.

but

if the issue is hijab; then it is modesty and modesty can be in the thoughts and the eyes as well.

so

if you dont wear hijab it should be fine.

as

for

those who love to preach those who do not wear it and do a lot other things that are a no-no…

i would say they need to have a deeper insight into what good a person may be doing( like not lying or hurting people with their bitc***g) and thus the issueof hijab, for a moment, becomes a non issue.

while the quran asks women to wear hijab (verse33:59)

it also asks men to lower their gazes (verse 24:30)

so

ha ha ha ha

i think those who are staring at us should be the first ones to read on hijab.

Comments

Actually - verse 33:59 uses

Actually – verse 33:59 uses the word Jalabibihinna, which means “their garments” and then you have the term “yudina” which means to draw closer or lower (lengthen/cover the legs).

Personaly, it is my view that if a muslim woman needed to wear a headscarf, it would be explicitly, repeatedly and left without doubt whether or not a headscarf is required. Considering that at the time the Quran was revealed that there was a word for headscarf and that word was not used I would have to say that the arguments for promoting the headscarf are illegitimate.

The rest of your article I agree with. I don’t understand why people feel the need to push their own beliefs upon others – either way.

I believe that the Hanafis

I believe that the Hanafis have determined that since kohl is applied by plunging a stick into a kohl pot and then applying the kohl to the eyes, then by analogy any make-up that comes in a tube/pot with a stick that can be plunged in and used on the eyes is good to go. It is recommended that the color be kohl, but it is not obligatory. There is a strict restriction to traditional kohl for the eyes among some scholars, especially the Zahiris who reject the above analogy. But the Hanbalis hold that there is a single report that Muhammad’s wives used pots of color and stuck their fingers in the pot in order to apply the color to their eyes. The Hanbalis argue that the analogy above is not acceptable, but through this ahad report they argue that women can use eye make-up if applied with the fingers only. The Malikis argue that the women of Medina tended to favor Smashbox brand make-up, especially the glittery base colors. Malikis thus argue that make up use is not limited to plunging sticks or fingers as the other schools claim, but rather is limited to Smashbox brand. There is some archaeological evidence there might have been a Sephora outlet where the Dairy Queen covering the Prophet’s favorite well is now in Medina, so this this final perspective makes the most sense to me.

I hope that was helpful.

“Face the burning” fuschia? Sounds good to me…

But seriously, what’s wrong with men wearing kohl? Looks good on some. And some of the women who wear it look like racoons.

And, in seventh century Arabia, kohl was looked upon as medicinal. Maybe it is.

I personally like men with

I personally like men with kohl on but they either have to be 1. gay, 2. goth, 4. really masculine. A really masculine guy with kohl on and a utilikilt. I’d throw myself at his feet.

Has anyone seen the utilikilt site? They should have personal ads there!

Kohl is a bit of an antiseptic and makes your eyes a little watery, hence the medicinal aspects. But it also dialates your pupils making women look oh so inviting, big pupils, big excitement. Too bad dialating your pupils is a really, really bad idea leading to cataracts and other problems. There is a reason they get really small in sunlight, you know.

kohl is totally in. for

kohl is totally in. for years in my part of the world..its when the rest of you is in “aabaa“and you accentuate the ONLY part that is visible that creeps me out. the point i was trying to make was that modesty lies deeper than the issues we have come to relate it to.
its the spirit too
or is it not??
thank you for all your comments and renderings.

I feel your pain, Hassan al

I feel your pain, Hassan al Makdis. One fine day in grad school, one of my housemates, a conservatively religious fellow who had far more luck with the ladies than I did, turned up with dark outlines around his eyes. "It's sunnah", he said, but it looked very bizarre indeed.

ah, the old hijab debate.  there is nothing in the Quran that states that women must dress like ninjas!  the ayat quoted for women to draw their veils over their faces was intended to mean modesty as a whole.  i understand that i’ll probably make enemies in this domain, but we have got to cut through the b.s.  the point of Islam is to increase our God awareness and better the way that we treat eachother as creations before the allmighty.  i will keep stating this until it sinks through to someone.  all the other debates are fun but irrelevant.
