Reader Blog Highlight: Fashion Mujahid Reviews Shukr's Fall Line
Posted August 8th, 2006 by Laury Silvers
Nakia, our Fashion Mujahid takes a look at Shukr's new fall line. Pointing out that cutting clothes just a little wider doesn't quite make it fashion, especially for women with curves. The Fashion Mujahid points out what styles look good on what shapes and what colors are right for your complexion.

Though the flare is not bad,
Though the flare is not bad, the pants and the top are simply too baggy, this look would look awful on a more full-figured woman.
Ladies, dressing Islamically doesn’t mean you avoid Macy’s or Nordstrom, you can find modest yet mainstream fashions that cover the body attractively.
Islamic clothing lines, most of them, they need a gay man’s touch.
That's why I offered the two
That’s why I offered the two sleeker looks- the ones with the wrap dress with pants and flares with a shirt- I knew that the Shukr lines would either swamp a petite, wiry frame, or possibly make a generous figure look positively vast. Alas, I could not find either look in natural fibers, but I’m sure that as these looks hit the stores, pieces in natural fibers should become available.
Perhaps Nakia and Gustavo,
Perhaps Nakia and Gustavo, you have found your calling? Do I hear business partners?
If nothing else you can make a guerilla reality tv show in shich you ambush a Muslim woman in a black poly coat and remake her. I have a digital video camera!
A young Muslim woman from
A young Muslim woman from Michigan may be joining here from myspace.com Islam chat. I convinced her how worthwhile it is, and the clincher was that Fashion Mujahid posts on designer hijab (is that the correct term?)
That would be lovely! Let
That would be lovely! Let me know when she registers and I will put her reader blog on the menu. We need more fashion talk, always.
I am presently looking at a few web pages with the most gorgeous shawls on them, I am delirious with worldly love for them. So beautiful they are a work of God!
Tell her welcome!
Love, I post on looking good
Love, I post on looking good while being modest. Designer's labels mean
very little to me. If you look ghastly in a Chanel, I will whip it off you
in favor of a thift store find if that's what's needed to make you look
good.
I'm still in therapy for an incident that happened with a formerÂÂ
roomate, in which she carried a brown houndstooth bag with her black
velvet cocktail gown, declining my offer of a matching bag. She claimed that the
fact that the brown houndstooth would somehow be better, as it was aÂÂ
fake Jones New York piece, whereas my black evening bag claimed no
famous name. Lord, help us all, she's a pharmacist.ÂÂ
I like Shukr; I've
I like Shukr; I’ve discovered it’s possible to get the clothes looking a little more nipped and tucked if you order them a size smaller than you normally would.
But I like Nakia am a thrifty at heart; my uniform in college was band-teeshirt over long-sleeved shirt and jeans, and I still do that a lot. It’s easy to throw a head-scarf on top.
Baraka B has actually seen my hair. The heat and humidity in New York the other week were like wonton soup; I couldn’t do it. I ditched the scarf. I decided my religion would look much more retarded if I passed out in the subway than if I simply forwent the headgear.
When I was younger I was the
When I was younger I was the guy that all my girl-friends would talk/show girl stuff to/with. Naughty stuff. And now, a decade+ later they’re showing me their HAIR! Hair! I am losing my touch (no pun intended).
I kid I kid. Sort of.
Yes, I did see your hair Willow, though it was a bit anti-climatic as I know you did it because of the heat and not because we are fam. Nonetheless, I felt honored, if scandalized.
PS- Willow is awesome and can speak on very very complex subjects in very very comprehendable speak.
That’s a skill of skills.
Being a gay man, I'm a hit
Being a gay man, I’m a hit with all the hijabis. Funny how some of the Muslim brothers get jealous of me being able to approach veiled Muslim women and have a decent conversation with them.
I should design my own Islamic clothing line.
I like drawing and my inspiration would come from the Mecca of chic hijabis, Teheran.
BUT BLACK WILL BE OUT, AND NO NIQABS, PERSIANS AIN’T GULF ARABS!
Pink is the new black
Pink is the new black Gustavo. Or at least it was 5 years ago. I wonder what it is now? Green? Yellow? I’m still a navy boy. I need to add some real colors into the mix. Been too long.
Anti-climactic! I'm sure it

If I were to design a
If I were to design a clothing line, it would probably be a mix of Talbot’s WASPy look with a healthy amount of ASHRO’s African American flair. Very chic, loads of color, but nothing too wild.
Please make it happen,
Please make it happen, Nakia, we of the nun-gypsy-bag-lady hijeb hinterland are counting on you.
My Islamic clothing, since
My Islamic clothing, since I’m Persian and Mexican, would be a fusion between Irani/Afghani and Mexican fashion, borrowing from both rich cultural traditions. Frida-Muslimah inspired clothing . . .
Now that I'm in Philly, I've
Now that I'm in Philly, I've found enough black poly- clad niqabis to shoot a whole season of the show. Seriously, if I knew how to sew, I'd be making clothes for myself and others. As it is, I just charge through clothing stores, bemoaning slits in skirts and the overabundance of synthetic fibers.
What is wrong with slits?
What is wrong with slits?
Er- a slit in a skirt would
Er- a slit in a skirt would reveal the legs. I’ve seen women sew or pin them shut, or just wear pants underneath, but that’s too much work. I like my pret a porter to be just that.
Check out www.PrimoModa.com
Check out www.PrimoModa.com it is exactly what everyone is one on this post is talking about. Modest women’s clothing but very stylish, colorful and trendy. Primo Moda is filling the gap for professional and active Muslim women. Primo Moda carries beautiful modest tops and sets, sports suits, swim suits, and formal wear. Check it out www.primomoda.com and see what you think.
Primo Moda is OK, it's a bit
Primo Moda is OK, it’s a bit overpriced. The colors aren’t very wearable for most circumstances, but if you get a bit from Primo, a bit from Shukr, you’d have a nice balance. The cut of the clothes is a pretty close one, again, the opposite of Shukr, where something in between would be both modest and flattering. Not wild about their stuff, but it’s not bad.
I really like primo and
I really like primo and think their designs are classic, aside from clothes i think its important for people have accessories, belts bracelet’s, even chanel sunglasses or some other designer.
Again, if the Chanel
Again, if the Chanel accessories flatter you, then go for it, or even better, get a decent looking knockoff. But if it doesn’t flatter your features, then the accessories are wearing you, and need to go. I like some of Al-Farah’s styles lately, and am mourning the loss of Al Hediya. That said, Marie Fareedah’s designs are scrumptious. More on her later, insha’Allah.
