Renaissance School Sheikh Shot

In Pakistan, a move by reformist parliament members and activists to repeal the Hudood Ordinance—under which rape victims can be condemned for adultery and sentenced to death if they fail to provide 4 male witnesses to the act—has met with extremist violence. Manzoor ul-Hassan, who figures largely at Pakistan's reformist Renaissance School (which supported the repeal of Hudood), was the victim of a drive-by shooting yesterday and is in the hospital in critical condition. I can't think of anything else to say. They're picking us off one by one while we sit on our hands and talk. I want to do something more meaningful but can't think of what; I have nothing but my ideas. Will it come down to competing militias? I'm so angry that I think if another Ahmad Shah Masood were to appear and start organizing a sort of Islamic Los Pepes to fight the fundamentalists, I would seriously consider signing up. We seem to have exhausted the more erudite options. They're not listening to people; they fight not for people but for ideas. Not for their children or the umma—there would at least be a shred of nobility in that—but for sterility, panic and emptiness; what they have come to call religion.

Fuck all those fucking asshole fucks. Fuck them and their fucking murderous fascist fucking (idea of) “religion” (and I’m this close to taking out the “idea of” and leaving it at that) and their fucking morals. Perhaps we need to redefine the human as material and get crazy-materialist on it where it is simply bad to destroy material. Fuck the talk about the umma and the talk about the deen and the talk about saving any of that clubhouse shit. And this is right about that time when someone wants to work within the tradition AKA the card-carrying requirement institution (this frozen concept of stiltified death, not you LS) as if Islam the institution can offer any help in this situation. The instituion’s sole function is to replicate itself, build more institutions. Little “i” islam, the impulse to disrupt and crush murderous fascists, is the only saving grace, in that it involes the world-wide umma and definitely NOT some clique-umma followers of a book (to the exclusion of other books) codified boy’s club.

I’ll join the Los Pepes when it drops the “Islamic” and starts getting big-world-Islam, the religion-less Islam.
