Over on Eteraz.org, I have seen Jinzaman invoke Shehu Usman before. In one case actually in relation to the process of how an Amirul Momineen is picked. Which makes his new post even more jarring.
The world is a sad, sad place, when the only people invoking Shehu Usman Dan Fodio are people espousing radical Deobandism. [Also, to call him "Shaykh Usman Dan Fodio"--a phrase I doubt he'd ever have heard in his life. Sheesh, man! Have you no respect specific Muslim cultures?]
I doubt J-Man has read the link he posted? Otherwise he might have noticed the word "Tasawwuf" in the very table of contents. From the Deobandi point of videw, Shehu Usman would have been considered a rather eggregious heretic.
Secondly, Shehu Usman did the opposite of what Jamia Hafsa has done. Allow me to quote the wikipedia:
"...dan Fodio was proclaimed Amir al-Muminin or Leader of the Faithful. This, in effect made him political as well as religious leader, giving him the authority to declare and pursue a Jihad, raising an army and becoming its commander. "
Translation: Shehu Usman, like The Prophet before him, did not raise the banner of revolt (literally, in The Shehu's case) or any arms until there was a community behind him that basically elected him political leader and gave him executive powers.
This is authority that neither Jamia Hafsa, nor Usama, nor any of these fanatics even bother to claim.
And to quote from the document Jinzaman hisself linked to as an introduction to Shaihu Usman (page 117 of the PDF, which is in the chapter about the The Jihad itself; material in square brackets is mine):
-------quote
The Shehu went on to state that the following were unlawful by consensus [Ijma, remember that word?]:
There should be no excuse whatsoever, short of active identification with the enemy, for attacking Muslims, seizing their property or depriving them of their freedom.
---------endquote
[BTW, I haven't read that document; I just went looking for what I knew would be there. I was born in the city what claims to be the "Capital of Shehu and Bello" (his successor and son) and grew up in that region, so our basic history classes included large expositions about The Shehu.]
Now, Jinzaman, and anyone else that cares to: you want to count how many ways the folks at Jamia Hafsa have violated those principles given by this Mujaddid you invoke?
PS: Please excuse the exclamation in the subject line of my comment; but it escapses the mouths of people born and socialized in the community Shaihu Usman left behind at moments where an American would exclaim "Jesus!"
