Snowed In

We've been hit by a huge snowstorm here in the North East.  The Valentine's Day Blizzard!  When I was married, whenever there was huge snowstorm I had to get out of the house.  I had to get into the car or walk outside or something.  My ex and I thought it was funny.  Seriously, no sooner would we get snowed in then I had to make tracks out.  I've been snowed in since I left him nearly 3 years ago now.  I'm snowed in today.  There looks to be nearly three feet of snow out there.  Still has to settle, could be less.  But I don't need to make tracks.  I haven't needed to make sure I had a way out of being snowed in since I left my husband.

Seems like a good sign.

We were snowed in yesterday, and went on an adventure down to the neighborhood grocer for junk food. Today we shoveled the van out and I took Kid Khalila SLEDDING!! It was so awesome.

Unschooling means we get a snow day any time it snows, if we want.

Now I’m listening to the “Eastern Hemisphere” show on our local vocational radio station.

I have been drinking a lot of hot chocolate lately.

This post made me curious to search for "snow" in the Qur'an.

Only came up with one verse so far: [024:043]

Do you not realize that GOD drives the clouds, then gathers them together, then piles them on each other, then you see the rain coming out of them? He sends down from the sky loads of snow to cover whomever He wills, while diverting it from whomever He wills. The brightness of the snow almost blinds the eyes.

- from Rashad Khalifa's translation.

Here is a footnote:

His translation on many Noble Verses is actually very good and much better than many of the Islamic ones out there. Plus, he uses the accurate translation of "egg-shaped" for the Arabic word "dahaha" in Noble Verse 79:30 to prove that Allah Almighty did indeed declare that He had made the earth into a spherical form. Please visit the following articles for more Noble Verses and proofs about the earth being spherical in the Noble Quran:

There is also an Hadith search engine, which shows four mentions of "snow":

SAHIH BUKHARI, BOOK 12: Characteristics of Prayer

Volume 1, Book 12, Number 711:

Narrated Abu Huraira:

Allah's Apostle used to keep silent between the Takbir and the recitation of Qur'an and that interval of silence used to be a short one. I said to the Prophet "May my parents be sacrificed for you! What do you say in the pause between Takbir and recitation?" The Prophet said, "I say, 'Allahumma, ba'id baini wa baina khatayaya kama ba'adta baina-l-mashriqi wa-l-maghrib. Allahumma, naqqim min khatayaya kama yunaqqa-ththawbu-l-abyadu mina-ddanas. Allahumma, ighsil khatayaya bil-ma'i wa-th-thalji wal-barad (O Allah! Set me apart from my sins (faults) as the East and West are set apart from each other and clean me from sins as a white garment is cleaned of dirt (after thorough washing). O Allah! Wash off my sins with water, snow and hail.)"

snow days and beautiful

snow days and beautiful verses!

I love it when the snow is falling and the city is quiet and you can hear the crystals fall.

Interesting ... thanks

Interesting … thanks again, Sitaram! I wouldn’t really have expected snow in the Qur’an.

Trying to explain snow to someone who has never seen, felt, or tasted it is impossible. On a couple occasions I’ve had the pleasure to see people get into snow for their first time. Snow rulz. (disclaimer: I’m not praying for an ice age!!)

Precisely, Hakim! Who would

Precisely, Hakim! Who would expect snow in the Qur’an. Yet, there it is. Now, if there were NO mention of snow, then someone with an agenda to discredit the text as divinely revealed would try to capitalize upon such a fact. The absence of snow would create a measure of doubt which would exceed the measure of assurance created by the mention of snow, since, for example, the 51st Psalm (50th in the Greek Septuagint) says “Wash me and I shall become whiter than snow.”

Hakim. Long time. Glad to

Hakim. Long time. Glad to hear you’re enjoying the snow.
