HELP WITH Celebrating Mawlid

Tagged:

Feb 26 is the Mawlid or the prophet's birthday, how do I celebrate his birthday? how do you? Mawlids a term used to refer to the observance of the birthday of the Islamic prophet Muhammad which occurs in Rabi' al-awwal, the third month in the Islamic calendarlid. I've only been to one simple dinner simple celebration a dinner. The first public celebrations by Sunnis took place in twelfth-century Syria, under the rule of Nur ad-Din Though there is no firm evidence to indicate the reason for the adoption of the Shi'ite festival by the Sunnis, some theorise the celebrations took hold to counter Christian influence in places such as Spain and Morocco.Theologians denounced the celebration of Mawlid as unorthodox, and the practice was briefly halted by the Ayoubides when they came to power, becoming an event confined to family circles.

Happy New Year! So...

Let's party like it's 1431! Because it, you know, is.
What's with the no celebration of the new year thing? I've always wondered about that. The eidayn are great, really, but they lack the frivolity one needs to really have a good time. With the obligations, the recommended sunan, etc it's definitely more rite than party. And everyone needs a good party.

With the eidayn, one must rise and get all gussied up early in the morning. I don't know about you, but if I must be presentable before seven, I'm out cold by noon. Not exactly conducive to hitting the party circuit. And the whole eating sweets, making sure you've paid zakat-ul fitr, and mapping out different routes to and from the eidgah? I'm not saying it's a bad thing, but the only thing I want to map out for a party is the shortest route to the dance floor. And before you ask, Schenectady does dance with his mama.

Happy Fathers Day!

Happy Fathers Day everyone.

I'm sitting here eating crunchy granola drinking dark organic fair trade coffee while Kid Khalila plays and I blog.  A good start to the day!

Next, a father-daughter bike ride before it gets too hot out.

Any other parents around here?  Anyone into alternative childrearing?
